Parents/Spectators
How can I get involved and make a difference?
It is quite simple! You can start by monitoring touchline behaviour, on your own touchline, making sure respect and sportsmanship starts with your own team. Here are a few pointers that you can follow which will help improve the game at the grass roots level.
- Never get into confrontations with other spectators.
- Get to know your child's team(s), parents and spectators. Please try and get to know the oppositions spectators who are also there each week supporting their child's team.
- Have a zero tolerance stance towards verbal abuse, aggression, bullying, racist comments and drug use.
- Always stand on your teams side of the pitch, not the oppositions side or behind the goal.
- Never ridicule or blame a child for their mistakes.
- Encourage both sets of players and applaud their skills, efforts and commitment throughout the game.
- Respect the referees decision as final, without question.
- Remember and respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants, regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
- Always stand behind the line or barrier if provided.
- Encourage respect and sportsmanship, not only on the sidelines but also on the field of play and encourage shaking hands at the end of the competitions with the players and spectators.
- Always remember that football is supposed to be the beautiful game and that it is supposed to be enjoyed by everyone. Football can only be football if all the players, parents, spectators and match officials enjoy themselves. Take that away and you take the heart out of the game.
